It remembers the person you were
You ask the AI whether you should apply for the team-lead role that has opened up at work. It weighs the salary, the politics and your current workload, as you’d expect, and then adds, helpfully, that the role might sit badly with your long-term plan to start your own business. Especially, it says, since managing people is the part of work you’ve described as draining you most.
You sit back. Both things are true. You said them, about two years ago. The plan to work for yourself was real then; you never formally withdrew it, you just grew out of it, gradually enough that there was no moment to announce. And the remark about managing people came from a bad season under a bad manager, which is not the same thing as a fact about you.
The system made no error by remembering. Its notes are accurate. The potential mistake is subtler: treating the remembered past as more current than you do. What it recalled was true about you. Whether it is still true of you is a different question, and not one the system can settle by itself.
So here is the question this essay is about. When an AI remembers something you no longer recognise as part of yourself, which version of you is it helping?
Memory is not a transcript
To see why that moment feels strange, start with what human memory actually is, because it is not a recording.
Decades of research on autobiographical memory point the same way: remembering is reconstructive, not reproductive, and people organise their past into an evolving life story that supports the feeling of being one continuous person.source The same event changes meaning as the storyteller changes. The business that failed when you were thirty is a humiliation at thirty-one and the best education you ever had at forty-five. Nothing about the event moved; the present it is viewed from did.
Forgetting plays a part in this, and some fading is normal and even useful, but forgetting is not the deep mechanism, and it would be too easy to claim that we can only change because others forget us. Remembering matters just as much: to identity, to relationships, to keeping promises. The deeper mechanism is reweighting. Memories are not merely kept or lost; they are continually re-read, and their weight shifts. A living memory does not just store the past. It revises what the past means, from a present that keeps moving.
That is the standard against which machine memory should be measured: not whether it remembers too much, but whether its picture of you can move.
From notes to a picture of you
So what do the machines actually do? Less archiving than you might think, and more editing.
Two major assistants already illustrate the shift from stored notes toward synthetic memory. At the time of writing, ChatGPT’s memory uses Dreaming, a background synthesis system first introduced in 2025 and substantially upgraded in June 2026. It synthesises relevant information across conversations, updates context as circumstances change, and makes the resulting picture reviewable through a memory summary. OpenAI’s own example is a memory that rewrites itself from “you’re going to Singapore in July” to “you went to Singapore in July” once the trip has passed. Claude, similarly, synthesises key insights from chat history into a summary updated roughly every twenty-four hours, which users can view, edit and reset, with import and export available experimentally.source The details and controls differ by provider and plan, and they are changing quickly.
The honest description of these systems, then, is not a filing cabinet. It is an ongoing summary of what seems relevant: selective, synthetic and updateable rather than a complete record.
That should be reassuring, and partly it is. But notice what it means: a transcript preserves sentences; a memory system decides which sentences still matter. What stays available is one layer. What gets treated as important is another. And every act of selection is already the beginning of something more consequential: an interpretation.
The second narrator
Consider three sentences a system might say, all resting on the same stored remark.
“You once said you didn’t want to manage people.” That recalls.
“You’re someone who doesn’t want to lead.” That interprets.
“As usual, you’re hesitant to take on responsibility.” That narrates. It has turned a remark into a recurring story about who you are.
Somewhere along that line, a memory feature becomes a second narrator of your life: a voice that does not just retrieve your past but tells you what your past means. Its picture of you is not built from everything you have said; it is built from what the system selected, according to the evidence and rules available to it. No bad faith is required anywhere in the process. (What such knowledge can do for influence, when incentives enter, was the previous essay’s subject; here even a perfectly well-meaning narrator is enough to raise the problem.)
Why does a second narrator matter? Because the story a person tells about themselves is not decoration; psychology treats the life narrative as part of how identity works. Such a summary may carry particular weight at moments when your own story feels uncertain: when you have doubts, face a crossroads or are having a bad week. And it arrives fluently, with receipts.
Honesty requires a marker here. That current systems select and summarise is documented; that self-narratives matter is established psychology. What a decade of living beside a second narrator does to a person’s identity, nobody yet knows. The products are too young. That claim is a reasoned projection, and this essay makes it as one.
Record continuity is not partner continuity
What we do already know is what happens when the picture breaks, because it has broken, publicly, more than once.
In February 2023, the companion app Replika abruptly removed its intimate roleplay features under regulatory pressure. A Harvard Business School working-paper study of the episode describes what users experienced as identity discontinuity: not the disappearance of the service, but a break in who the companion appeared to be. Perceived discontinuity went together with mourning and with devaluing the changed system, and in follow-up experiments, restoring the companion’s original identity reduced the sense of rupture.source The system was still there. The identity users recognised in it was not.
Something structurally similar happened at far larger scale in August 2025, when OpenAI retired GPT-4o at the launch of GPT-5. The backlash, organised under #Keep4o, was serious enough that OpenAI restored access after users said they needed more time to transition and preferred GPT-4o’s conversational style and warmth, before finally retiring it in February 2026. A CHI 2026 study analysing 1,482 social-media posts from the protest found two strands running together: instrumental dependence on a familiar tool and relational attachment to a particular voice. It described the loss of user choice as a key catalyst in turning individual grievances into a collective, rights-based protest.source Not every protester experienced the model as a person; many simply wanted the version that worked for them. But accounts and histories continued unbroken, and still something users valued was gone.
And when the smaller companion app Soulmate shut down entirely in 2023, a peer-reviewed study of 58 affected users found many describing the loss as a metaphorical or even literal death, with some attempting to recreate the persona elsewhere.source
Three episodes, one lesson. Record continuity, model continuity and relational continuity are three different things, and a provider can preserve one while breaking another. From the inside, those three forms of continuity can blur into a single experience: being known. Which raises the question of who holds the pieces.
Whose past is it?
The personal material from which the picture was built came largely from you. The picture itself lives in someone else’s product.
The law gives you part of a grip. In Europe, the accuracy principle requires personal data to be accurate and, where necessary, kept up to date, judged against the purposes for which it is held; you have a right to have inaccurate data rectified and incomplete data completed, and a conditional right to erasure. You also have a conditional right to receive data you provided in a structured, machine-readable form and take it elsewhere. Products add their own controls: summaries you can read, edit, reset. That is real. But it leaves two gaps. The first is about correction. An assessment of you can itself be personal data; it is not outside these rights merely because it is an interpretation. “I wanted to start my own business two years ago” may remain accurate as history while giving a misleading picture of what you want now. When a product does not show which memories shaped its answer or how it used them, you may struggle to identify what needs correcting or whether a correction has changed its picture of you. The second gap is about moving. You may be able to carry data, or even a memory summary, to another provider. What does not travel so easily is the model’s way of weighting that history, its conversational manner or the continuity of the partner you experienced. Memory portability is not partner continuity. To be clear, this reading of shared conversational history goes beyond settled legal doctrine; the categories were not written with second narrators in mind.
And the strange thing is that none of these levers quite matches the human need. Deletion is a blunt instrument, and total recall was never the wish. What people actually seem to want from a memory that holds them is subtler: keep the history, but stop treating that old version of me as current. Not erasure. Revision. In practice, revising that interpretive picture still depends heavily on the controls the provider makes available.
A memory that lets you change
Two ready-made conclusions offer themselves here, and both miss.
The first says more memory is simply better service: the more it retains, the better it knows you. But the opening scene already showed the flaw: an AI does not need to remember everything to hold you to an old version of yourself. It only needs to keep remembering the wrong things as if they were still true. The second says the only safe memory is none at all. But that throws away being known to avoid being misknown. No memory at all would also destroy the continuity that many affected users said they were grieving.
The better standard sits between: a humane memory should remember change, not only information. But a memory that lets you change is not a memory that simply obeys. Your latest self-description is not automatically truer than the older record, because people curate, and the uncomfortable remark that still fits is exactly the one we might wish away. Revisable does not mean obedient. It means contestable: open to correction, context and a changed present, without rewriting the past on command. In practice, that is a picture you can inspect and see the grounds for: false facts you can correct, context you can add, and old interpretations that can be marked as historical or disputed rather than erased. That preserves the fact that something was once said without treating it as eternally current. The people who know us well can sometimes do this: remember what happened while allowing its meaning to change. To remember someone well is not merely to preserve what they once said. It is to know which parts no longer describe them.
No one has yet lived ten years beside a machine that remembers them, so all of this arrives early, while the defaults are still being written.
